TL;DR
Focused Foot Switch Engineering Since 1952
Linemaster has designed and manufactured foot switches since 1952. Seventy-four years of work in a single discipline produces a depth of engineering knowledge that a broader product portfolio does not allow. When engineering attention is divided across many product categories, institutional knowledge in any one of them develops slowly. When attention remains fixed on one category for decades, each project contributes to a cumulative understanding of how operators actually interact with foot controls, how designs perform over time in the field, and where failure modes tend to originate. Unintended actuation, failure to provide an output, fluid ingress, cable damage, loss of tactile differentiation, and mechanical wear rarely announce themselves in an initial specification. Recognizing where they come from, and designing against them early, is knowledge built through direct responsibility for carrying controls from concept through production.
PRESPEC is a direct extension of that specialization. A design phase development program is only as useful as the engineering judgment behind it, and that judgment is the product of sustained focus. It informs the questions asked at the start of a project, the failure modes examined in a Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, the acceptance criteria and test methods defined before formal verification, and the design decisions made when requirements compete with one another.

Experience Across Surgical, Imaging, and Medical Robotics Applications
Within that single discipline, Linemaster has supported hundreds of applications, including surgical equipment, diagnostic and imaging systems, medical robotics, and multifunction medical platforms. Each application area carries its own demands. A surgical foot switch may be located and actuated entirely by feel while the clinician’s attention remains on the patient, exposed to fluids and repeated disinfectant cleaning, and expected to resist unintended activation across a long mechanical life. Layered over all of it are the regulatory frameworks that shape medical control development for device OEMs, including the IEC 60601 series, usability engineering under IEC 62366-1, and risk management aligned with ISO 14971.
Repeated work across that range develops a form of engineering pattern recognition. An experienced team can identify where a proposed control design is likely to encounter difficulty, how pedal force, travel, and spacing interact in actual use, which sealing and material strategies tend to hold up under cleaning agent exposure, and which requirements need to be resolved early in development rather than discovered during formal verification. This capability is cumulative by nature. It develops through decades of applied work across a wide range of programs, and that timeline resists being compressed or acquired secondhand.
Why Design Phase Development Programs Are Uncommon Among Control Manufacturers
Programs of this kind remain uncommon among manufacturers of medical foot switches and foot pedals, and the reason is structural rather than conceptual. Design phase support is not difficult to propose. It is difficult to deliver credibly, because credible delivery requires the institutional knowledge described above to already exist within the manufacturer. It is the difference between a manufacturer that can participate as a development partner, helping identify questions that may not be apparent in an initial specification, and one that can only build to a specification after it has been completed.
That is the position PRESPEC occupies. It draws on decades of focused work in foot switch engineering, applied across hundreds of programs in surgical, diagnostic, imaging, robotic, and multifunction medical applications, all supported by an ISO 13485 certified quality management system. The program formalizes a capability Linemaster has been building since 1952, and that foundation is what allows it to function as more than a service offering in name.

Bring PRESPEC Into Your Medical Device Design Phase
If your team is entering the design phase of a new medical device or control platform, PRESPEC is structured to contribute from the first stages of development. Visit the PRESPEC by Linemaster page to review how the program works and what it can bring to your custom medical foot switch or foot pedal project.
